The Miles Davis Album ‘Kind of Blue' is perhaps the most influential and best selling jazz record ever made. Although recorded over 40 years ago the album still outsells many jazz records in today's market. This is the album that if people don't have they have certainly heard of, and instantly recognize the tracks when they hear them...

With this album being as popular and as accessible as it is we have often wondered has a modern band ever tried to record this material in their own style and is there a band out there gigging this great material allowing audiences to appreciate the forms of this jazz masterpiece in a live situation? There is now! - My Blue Seven is a seven piece jazz ensemble with the same line up as on the ‘Kind of Blue' Album plus a guitarist (well someone has to employ them!)

The ensemble began as a tribute to the great Miles Davis Band performing music from the ‘Kind of Blue' album. As the band has developed we have expanded the repertoire endeavouring to remain within the modal style of ‘Kind of Blue' - a form of jazz that allows the improviser to use sets of scales or ‘modes' to improvise upon rather than chord sequences or changes.

When the opportunity to work in the studio presented itself, we thought what better than to record our versions of four of the tracks originally on ‘Kind of Blue'. The arrangements we use are to some extent different to those from the album, as these are not copies or cover versions of these great jazz tunes, but our way of paying homage to one of the finest albums of the 20th Century. Also our instrumentation is slightly different (darn guitarists!) and our interpretations give the charts a modern up to date feel with each musician bringing something of his own personality to the recording. Due to the nature of this music every performance is different. No two improvisations the same. Perhaps this is what gives this music the appeal it does to musicians and audiences alike, and basing these improvisations on the famous charts of ‘Kind of Blue' gives the ensemble extra appeal as everyone should know the tunes!
